Watch the Big Waves on Your Maui Vacation
Most of the popular Maui vacation rental accommodations can be found along the shores of West and South Maui where the weather is almost always blissfully calm, clear and tranquil. Most vacationers flock to the soothing white sand beaches that epitomize the perfect tropical paradise, but the island of Maui has more faces than this one. Have you ever taken a drive to the other side to experience the wild and exciting North Shore?
This El Niño charged winter has brought with it a magnitude of surf rarely seen. Fifty foot waves have been churning up the water at Pe'ahi, also known popularly as Jaws. This spot has no beach, only cliff sides. As you can imagine, their ridges have been lined with crowds of people who have come to watch the particularly skilled (and brave) big wave surfers who are tackling these beautiful monsters.
The intrepid souls that take on these waves require personal watercraft tows to position them in the fast-moving surf or to pick them up in a rescue situation. Below is some amazing video of the recent Pe'ahi activity. Who knows, when the weather is a little less extreme, you might enjoy a surfing or wind-surfing lesson.
Check our up-to-date condo rental availability calendar to find which units are available on which days. While you're here, you will also need transportation and we can direct you to good Maui car rental companies. See our Maui information section to learn more about the island in general.
