Snorkeling on your Maui Vacation

Snorkeling is probably one of the most beautiful, exotic and convenient activities that Maui vacationers can experience. Renting snorkel gear is pretty inexpensive, snorkeling is suitable for young children under supervision if they are good swimmers, and it can be a wonderfully intimate shared experience if you're on a romantic getaway.
Snorkeling is great for an extremely broad age range, especially if you know where to go for it. Most of our vacation rentals are located on the world famous Kaanapali Beach where the water is calm, especially in the mornings (the earlier the better). On its north end is "Black Rock" which forms a natural wall on that end of the beach and sinks into the ocean where it makes an excellent anchor for the coral reef growing around it. It's a great place to snorkel and you can find many vivid fish there.
Other great snorkel locations are Olowalu, which includes the beaches you see along the road out of Lahaina toward the center of the island, and La Peruse Bay on Maui's south shore past Wailea at the edge of the lava fields. Now for the more curious of you who want to learn about the fish you are seeing, you can grab a free pdf of common Maui fish.
Keep in mind that wherever you are snorkeling, conditions are always best early in the morning when the water is flat, the wind is low and visibility in the water is high. If you've never been snorkeling before but are interested in trying it out, don't miss the opportunity! It's like a whole new world in that water and it's also vastly warmer than the ocean along the mainland coastal states.
