Haleakala Voluntourism on Your Maui Vacation

Haleakala National Park contains some of Hawaii's most precious ecological treasures, including unique ecosystems found nowhere else in the world. The park is considered a must-see for all visitors who enjoy sightseeing and birdwatching.

The Pacific Whale Foundation will be hosting a group of volunteers to help remove invasive pine trees and partake in a relaxing picnic lunch at Hosmer's Grove. From it's impressive 7,000 foot elevation, you will see a whole new Maui. The views of the island aren't the only spectacular quality of this area. You will see fascinating native plants and rare native birds, some of which can only be found on Maui, and only at these high elevations.

In aiding restoration efforts, you will get more intimate look at Maui than most vacationers do. This is the benefit of what is now called "voluntourism." The Pacific Whale Foundation has designed this opportunity through their Volunteering on Vacation program, with support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

As a token of gratitude, you'll be given a Volunteering on Vacation tote bag, and you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing that your efforts helped to restore Maui's incredible native ecosystem. Also, it's a great way to get to know the island without denting your budget.

Should you choose to participate, you will need to bring lunch, water and warm clothes. There will be no charge to get into the park of course. If you are staying at one of our West Maui vacation rentals, it's a long drive to Hosmer's Grove, but not to worry. Transportation is provided. You just have to be at the Pacific Whale Foundation Store in the Harbor Shops of Ma'alaea at 7:30am.

For more details on volunteering, and if you want to make reservations to participate, visit the Pacific Whale Foundation website. Space is limited, so make your reservations early. These trips take place once per month, but the link above has a list of dates. The next one will be on September 5th.

As Maui accommodation specialists, it's important to us that you experience the most enjoyable vacation on a budget that is comfortable for you. Take a look at our one bedroom West Maui condos. Or perhaps our three bedroom Maui oceanfront condos if you have a large group. If you need any assistance, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Mahalo for reading this week!
