Maui Hula Competition
Looking for an infusion of Hawaiian cultural performance in your vacation to Maui? If you're willing to make the jaunt from our West Maui condos to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, we recommend you get tickets for the Ku Mai Ka Hula 8th Annual International Hula Competition.
This kind of event brings you authentic Hawaiian culture at its best, in all its shining glory. Not only will you have the opportunity to observe an ancient dance tradition, but the beautiful music that goes with it. The performance will take place in the wonderful Castle Theater at the MACC.
One of the interesting facets about this competition is that it will involve both hula schools from Hawaii and Japan. You might not have expected it, but hula is very popular in certain circles in Japan, and there are schools that are very serious about the art. There will be solo and group performances with kahiko (traditional hula) and 'auana (modern hula) categories.
If you are interested in attending, this event takes place on Saturday, September 14th. It will begin at 1pm and end at 7pm. Tickets are going for $25 per person, but half price for kids aged 12 and under. Visit the MACC website for more information.
