Maui Chinese New Year Celebration

Hawaii is home to a fantastically diverse population of people, and most of them are a blend of ethnicities, including Hawaiian, Filipino, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese, along with a mix of European. If you've been on a Maui vacation before, you may have already observed this, assuming you've tried some authentic local food, which involves elements from many of these cultures. Thanks to Hawaii's diversity, we have a lot of celebrations, and Chinese New Year is one of them.Maui celebrates the Chinese New Year

Since we suggested a traditional New Year's activity last week, we thought it only fair to let you know that there will be a lively Chinese New Year celebration on February 1st at Maui Mall Shopping Center in Kahului, which is near the airport, and about 50 minutes away from our Kaanapali condo rentals. This festival is a good opportunity to experience some authentic local culture, and while Maui Mall is not a fancy tourist attraction, it's a good place to catch a flick, or grab a bite to eat.

February 1st will herald the Chinese year of the horse, so you can expect a lot of symbolic imagery reflecting this. There will be fireworks, lion dancers, Chinese cultural demonstrations/entertainment, a Chinese attire contest for kids, crafts, food booths, free Chinese calligraphy, a cooking contest, and hopefully a lot of good luck for the new year!

If you are interested in the way that Chinese culture has influenced Hawaii, you should make a point of it to attend. It will be held on February 1st between 9am and 2pm. There is no admission fee. While you're in Kahului, you may also want to check in to see if there are any events taking place at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

We hope you had a great New Year's celebration, and that if you missed the one on January 1st, maybe you'll have the chance to attend the Chinese version. If you need assistance with your accommodations, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Mahalo for reading this week!
