You probably know we've got coffee, but did you know we've got wine? The Tedeschi Vineyards and Winery are located at the 20,000 acre Ulupalakua Ranch, on the slopes of Haleakala. The land is spectacularly beautiful, combined with the breathtaking views of the island, so you will not be disappointed by this scenic drive, even if it's a long way from Maui beachfront accommodations.
Once you arrive, you will find a wonderful selection of red, white, sparkling and specialty wines. The wine tasting room is located in the King's Cottage, which is one of the oldest historic buildings on Maui, dating back to 1874 when it was built for King David Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani. The king favored this location as a place to relax and find peace of mind, and when you visit, you'll understand why.
Aside from the wines, you'll find a wide array of Hawaiian-made products and specialty foods and gifts. The impressive bar at the wine tasting room was cut from a single mango tree, and is 18 feet long. Outside on the Winery grounds, you'll find towering historic trees and other historic buildings where old photos and descriptions provide a unique portrait of the past.
Of course this is a great spot to visit for wine enthusiasts, but also for photographers. The photo ops are endless with all the interesting scenes at the vineyard, the sprawling acreage of the ranch, and the broad vistas of the rest of the island. The sparkling ocean off in the distance is particularly lovely around sunset from this vantage. It'll be an hour and a half drive if you are coming from West Maui accommodations, but well worth the trip.
The tasting room is open from 10am to 5pm daily, except for major holidays, and three tours of the winery and the grounds are offered at no charge at the following times: 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. Check out the Maui Winery website for location and directions.
